It is certainly tempting to stay tethered to the one you still love. How can you say ‘no’ when they insist they want to continue to be friends?

A breakup does a number on a person’s ego. The big ones can be just as hard on the dumper as it is on the dumpee. But one thing is certain- if the dumper wants to stay friends, they most likely want you around to feed their ego until someone else comes along. Yeeesh, stings right? Well, it’s not a fun feeling to lose your cake and not be able to eat it too. If they don’t want to be with you romantically anymore, there is always someone else out there who will- and you can bet, this is uncomfortable for them to accept even if they chose to end the relationship.

As humans, we are scientifically programmed to hang on to the things that give us a steady rush of dopamine- think of it like a runner’s high.
